getting lcd monitor d-sub error every 15 minutes?

i understand this is meaning no signal to video card. but im getting it every 15 seconds. monitor goes black and comes back on again. i have a adapter on lcd to computer and have retightened the connection already.
vista, hp pavillion, a bout 3 years old.
